Greetings all...the trip has been wonderful so far! We headed out early towards the Normandy Region in the North of France. Our first stop was in Pointe du Hoc, which is where the 2nd Ranger Bn attacked up on the cliffs where there were thought to be German guns. After scaling the cliff and taking heavy casualties, they found they were empty bunkers.
After Pointe du Hoc, we headed down to Omaha Beach and the American Cemetary from Normandy. What a privelage to be where so many lost their lives on such hallowed ground. It was breathtaking! Wish you were there Uncle Bobby! 9,600+ American graves. What a sight to behold as you look over top of the crosses into the thirsty waters of the sea.
We stopped in Arromanches for lunch, which was nearby further down the coast. This was the site of one of the manmade harbors made during the war. You can see 150ft concrete barriers in the shape of an arch around the coastline. Here we could actually go on the beach itself.
After our short lunch, we would then embark on what would end up being the neverending bus ride to Troyes. 9 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!! Should it have taken this long, you ask? Oh no-it was only 266 miles or so...well, there was construction, rain,rush hour on a Friday, and oh did I mention, the GPS we were using was really designed for a car and not a charter bus, so the mileage was very inaccurate! We finally arrived in Troyes at 1130 or so to eat dinner. It was 2 am before we ever made it up to our rooms! Yikes! What a day! Great pictures and great memories though! Check them out!
